A Song Stuck in My Head: Is This a Message From God or Am I Just Crazy?

Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? Experts call this an “earworm”, from the German translation ohrwurm, a term meaning a portion of a song or music that repeats compulsively in one’s mind. Some experts believe that certain songs have properties that are similar to histamines that make our brain itch. The only way to scratch the itch is to repeat the song in our minds.
I have another theory. This theory has no scientific research; it is just my own thoughts on earworms. When I get a song stuck in my head, and it is one I have not just heard on the radio or TV, I believe it is a message from God . I need to listen and think hard about the meaning of the words.
I do have something to back this up, though many of you may think I’m a little bit crazy. But hear me out. My Mom had a song stuck in her head for many days (Red River Valley). It was so bad that it kept her awake at night. The song was one that her brother sang all the time. Her brother has been dead for many years and she had not heard that song in many years. So the only explanation was that this was a message of some kind. She did some research on the song and was fascinated by the origin and other bits of information. Suddenly, she decided to finally write the book she had wanted to write for so many years. Her brother wanted her to write this book…so could this have been a message from him or maybe God telling her to do it? She is now writing this book, so you decide ( the song is now out of her head).
I have a few of my own personal experiences but it would take too long to write them so I will just talk about today. I have this song stuck in my head. It is called “What a Feeling” by Irene Cara and it is from the movie “Flashdance”, a 1983 movie about a woman who works as a welder and exotic dancer but dreams of dancing with a real dance company. If you haven’t seen this movie, go out and rent it. It is a “feel good” movie about dreams coming true. These are the words that I keep singing over and over:
What a feeling, bein’s believin’
I can’t have it all, now I’m dancin’ for my life
Take your passion, and make it happen
Pictures come alive, you can dance right through your life
I honestly have not heard this song in many, many years, so where did it come from and why? I have a dream but sometimes I get discouraged and I have those doubts creep into my mind. “You’ll never be able to do that” or “That’s way out of my comfort zone” or sometimes I compare myself to others that are successful and think I can never be like that. I believe this song is God telling me to stop the negative talk and just believe I can reach my goal. What do you think?
Remember the next time you get a song stuck in your head, don’t try to get rid of it; stop and really listen. It might be a message that you need to hear. Leave a comment and let me know what you think. I would love to hear from you.
